Phonics is taught from Foundation onwards at Potton Lower School, through a range of engaging and exciting activities. We equip our children with the skills required to successfully access early reading, and the children make rapid progress.

The phonics screening check is a short and simple assessment of phonic decoding. It consists of a list of 40 words, half real words and half non-words, which Year 1 children read to a teacher. Administering the assessment usually takes between four and nine minutes per child. At Potton Lower School, we have high expectations and results to match. All of our staff are fully trained in The Sounds-Write approach, a quality first phonics program.

We are consistently proud of our outstanding Phonics results, achieving above both the Local Authority and National Average.
